April News Letter |
12th April 2008
Hi guys (and gals). Sorry to bother you with a boring old Newsletter but it has been suggested that, as IPAS has got off to such a good start in 2008 an e-mail might be a good way to make sure that everyone knows what’s been going on and, more importantly, what might be in store for us in the future.
Publicity
As you may have heard, I have taken over the role of PRO and I’d probably best explain what my aims and hopes are for you all.
First of all my job is to ‘spread the word’; in other words let as many people as possible in the shooting community know that we exist, how we shoot and generally get the message over that “It’s fast, It’s furious and it’s fun!” I do this by regularly issuing Press or News Releases usually to the five main shooting magazines. Any contacts you have that may be helpful – please let me know.
My second task and hopefully one I don’t have to do often is responsive PR, in other words to defend our sport whenever and wherever it may come under attack.
Where I can also help is in promoting matches within and also outside our community. I also negotiate hotel discounts – so if you know of a half-way decent hotel near one of our ranges, once again let me know please. If you need a hotel please also let me know – I might just have one that will reduce their rates for you.
In case anyone is wondering ‘why bother?’ I could point out that the last time we ran a concentrated PR campaign it was so successful that we had something like 70 attend a match and with PP seemingly on the ropes in the UK we need to be strong. After all we either expand or die.
Events/Matches
So far in 2008 we have had four matches and each has been fun and run successfully. We hope to make them even bigger and better in future. In fact, before too long it may be necessary to pre-register for a match to be able to ensure a place on it at all!
The next event is to be the IPAS match at East Barnet on the 27th April. Full details are available on the www.ipas.org.uk site.
Future matches will be announced on both sites where possible. We shall try to give as much notice as we can but competitors are asked, where possible, to give us notice of their intention to attend. It makes life so much easier for the Match Director – and he can order the right amount of food where appropriate.
New Shooters
We seem to be attracting quite a lot of interest elsewhere in the shooting community (over 300 ‘reads’ of one of my posts on another bulletin board) and it is therefore likely that we will have newbies coming to our matches with a view to becoming regulars.
It is possible that some of these visitors will not have all the correct equipment so we are establishing a ‘pool’ of spare kit for their use – see below.
The ipas.org.uk Site
Mandrake has been working hard to bring the site up to date and to give it a more modern feel. As ALL of our matches will be announced on there as well as anywhere else I can get coverage, it is rather important that all our competitors look in once in a while.
Grants
I have located two sources that look likely to help us out with grants. We may well apply (up to £10,000 is up for grabs!) for assistance in establishing a pool of equipment and pistols for loan. We would also be looking to upgrade our target sets and it is therefore likely that we shall shortly have new timers as well as electrically linked sets of plates, perhaps a couple of sets at each of the locations that we currently use. There should be sufficient left over to have a few spare sets as well.
… and finally
If any of you have any ‘stories’ that could conceivably be of interest to the shooting media then please let me know and I can help you write your article, or even write it for you. Should you have any photographs that would be of interest than I should also welcome these. As you will all realize, we need to expand as Old Father Time is working against some of our members; some find new interests, girls/drink/football. So we need to continually top-up our membership list. If you know of anyone who might be interested in our branch of the sport then please encourage them to attend one of our matches – and then make sure they get a really good welcome. Remember, each new member that you introduce knows at least one other person who may be interested. Each of them knows of someone etc. etc. After all, to shoot IPAS does not need expensive membership of any ‘Shooting Association’ or attendance at a special Safety Course. All that’s needed is to be able to display a basic ‘club level’ of shooting skill and a lot of common sense.
And at the very end, sorry to have gone on so long. Many thanks for all the help I received the last time I acted as PRO. I hope I can continue to rely on your support. After all, it’s YOU I’m working for.
Cheers,
Dug
